Irlen Syndrome
Grades 1 – Adult
Irlen Syndrome
Irlen Syndrome, also known as Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome. It is a perceptual processing disorder that affects the brain’s ability to process visual information. People with Irlen Syndrome may see the printed page differently, causing discomfort and difficulty reading. It’s not detected by standard vision tests or corrected with regular prescription glasses.
Diagnosis is typically done through an Irlen Screening or evaluation by a certified Irlen diagnostician. Treatment often includes the use of Irlen Spectral Filters—specially tinted lenses or overlays that filter out the problematic wavelengths of light.
Symptoms of Irlen may include:
- Headaches or eye strain while reading
- Words appearing to move, blur, or distort on the page
- Difficulty with light sensitivity (especially fluorescent lighting)
- Trouble with reading, depth perception, or concentration
- Car and motion sickness
Common signs include:
- Slow, inefficient, and/or choppy reading
- Skipping lines or rereading lines
- Poor comprehension
- Fatigue or attention problems when reading
- Avoidance of reading or other visually intensive tasks
Irlen Lenses benefit people with:
- Dyslexia
- ADHD
- Autism
- Concussion or traumatic brain injury (TBI)
- Chronic migraines or light sensitivity
- PTSD
